Running Your First SDA Analysis

SDA has a number of statistical programs like correlation, crosstabulation, multiple regression, and others.  Each of these analyses are performed by completing a "form", that differs depending on your analysis, and submitting this form to SDA.

Look at the first row of the table.  We can see that on average, GSS respondents spend approximately 4.2 hours each week using the Internet.

To determine this value (4.2), we need to calculate an average by completing and submitting an SDA form.  This is shown in the following graphic:

The steps include:

  • Open the SDA analysis page for Frequencies or crosstabulation.
  • type in the mnemonic netime in the "row" cell in the form.  This is the value being averaged
  • Select appropriate options using the checkboxes:
    • Statistics
    CHECKED
    • Suppress table
    CHECKED
    • Question text
    CHECKED
    • Color coding
    NOT REQUIRED HERE
    • Show T-statistic
    NOT REQUIRED HERE
  • Click on "Run the Table."

Note that the box to suppress the table has been checked since we are only interested in summary statistics.

Click here to open a window to perform this analysis.

Follow the above steps, and you should see that the mean number of hours using the Internet is 4.2.  Your first analysis is complete!
